Reptites (きょうりゅうじん , Dinomen?) were the first sentient race to evolve in the world of Chrono Trigger. As their name suggests, they are a race of evolved reptiles. It is known that the human race evolved due to the quantity of Dreamstone in the planet's crust, so it can be assumed that the Reptites may have evolved for the same reason.

PhysiologyEdit

As reptiles, Reptites are stronger and hardier than humans. Their tough, scaly skin protects them from dangers and comes in variations of green, blue, and purple. Despite the physical resilience, they are very sensitive to lightning, which stuns them and leaves them vulnerable to physical attacks. Reptites are cold-blooded, which is why their castle sat amid a chain of volcanoes and why they faced extinction in the coming Ice Age. They have large, round heads, reptilian eyes, and are mostly bipedal.

Due to the lack of specimen present in game, it is difficult to detect any sexual dimorphism in the species. In fact, the only example is Azala, their leader. Wide hips and breasts are not present in this female Reptite. Because reptiles are born from eggs, they lack these gender differentiating features seen in gestating mammals; reptiles hatch from eggs and immediately leave the nest without requiring special nourishment from their mothers. Two of the only attributes that prove Azala's gender in game are her pink garments and character dialogue.

During Prehistory, Reptite society advanced technologically to the same level as the humans of 600 A.D.. With a well-structured monarchy, led by their psychic Queen, Azala, and an army of lesser reptilian specie.

The center of their society was Tyranno Lair, which sat atop a high peak in a volcanic mountain chain. They used other reptilian creatures like Megasaurs, Avian Rex, and Terasaurs as guard-beasts for their lairs.

Heavily relying on war as a means to survive as a race, the Reptites engaged in fights with the fledgling human race. During the course of the game, they burn down the village of Laruba and kidnap many people from both Laruba and Ioka Village, including Kino.

Reptites are first encountered by Crono when he and his friends travel to Prehistory, searching for a sample of Dreamstone to repair the Masamune and defeat Magus. Descending Mystic Mountains from the time-travel Gate, the party is swarmed by Reptites. Failing to keep the hoard at bay, they are soon pinned against a rock face. Ayla, leader of the Iokan Tribe, appears to rescue the crew. She invites the party back to the Meeting Ground to celebrate the victory. Before Crono can receive the Dreamstone from Ayla, the stone's holder, Reptites sack the village, making away with the precious mineral and the group's only means of returning to their proper timeline, the Gate Key. Tracking the thieves through Forest Maze, the Reptite Lair is breached, the prisoners freed, and Azala's champion, Nizbel, slain.

After defeating Magus, Crono and his friends are transported back to Prehistory, where they learn the Reptites have burned Laruba Village to ruins. To avenge the people of Laruba, Ayla borrows Dactyls from their nest and flies to Tyranno Lair with Crono. Battling through the towers, the party rescues imprisoned Larubans and defeats Azla and her lapdog, Black Tyranno. Shortly after, Lavos appears in the sky and collides with the Lair, decimating it to a crater. Most of the Reptites died in the explosion, although there are a few survivors in the Giant's Claw in 600 A.D. Crono confronts them on his search for the Rainbow Shell at the request of Toma. Any other Reptites that survived the explosion died from the coming Ice Age.

Lost SanctumEdit

A colony of Reptites became lost in time years before 65,000,000 B.C. Known as the Lost Sanctum, it featured an entire swath of land and a fully-preserved and populated Reptite village. The party's visit to the Lost Sanctum illustrated some prototypical elements of Reptite and Dragonian culture, including the existence of shrines that require an emblem to access (the Reptmark for the Reptites, and the Dragon Emblem for the Dragonians). The ritual of fusing two Prismastones together carries similarities to the fusion of two Dragon Tears to make the Chrono Cross. The party also discovered that the Reptites, while intelligent, still believed in mythology (and even considered the party gods after Crono helped them).

AftermathEdit

One of the alternate endings in Chrono Trigger unlocks when Lavos is defeated after fighting Magus, but before fighting Azala and the Black Tyranno in Tyranno Lair. Since Ayla was removed from prehistoric times at Lavos' defeat, and did not defeat Azala, history changed in an unexpected way. This ending sequence is exactly the same as the opening of the game (Crono wakes up and goes to the Millennial Fair, bumping into Marle) except for one small fact. Every person is now a Reptite. The lizard-men became the dominant species, since Ayla wasn't there to defeat them. Because she did survive, the human race was not made extinct either. Only, it became subservient to Reptites.

Chrono CrossEdit

After 1000 A.D., large excavations carried out on Central Continent Zenan revealed Reptite dwellings and possibly the Tyranno Lair itself. Analysts noted that the Reptite civilization existed long before the first human settlements were formed, and that the Reptites had acquired the advanced skill of architecture before becoming extinct in the Ice Age. The Reptites would exert much influence from beyond the grave, however, as another dimension existed in which Lavos never reached the planet, and the Reptites dominated and defeated the early humans instead.

The Reptites continued to prosper, eventually developing a philosophy of close, symbiotic relationship with nature. As the Reptites evolved over millions of years, they became Dragonians and created vast cities. Their ultimate achievement was the creation of Dinopolis, a floating city headed by the Dragon God, a machine that enabled control over the natural world. Dinopolis was dragged into the Keystone Dimension as part of Project Kid; the planet somehow shunted it there to act as a counterbalance against Chronopolis, which had just traveled backward in time after the Time Crash. The resulting battle would echo the fate of the Reptites millions of years before; the Chronopolis forces gutted the city and captured the Dragon God, whom they split up into six parts and used to terraform El Nido. The surviving Dragonians dispersed onto the new islands, where they mingled with the Chronopolis workers dispatched to populate the new paradise. Some become involved with the humans, resulting in a new Demi-human species. The Dragonians also continued to revere nature religiously, and created several dwellings and fortresses that operated on Elements. Unfortunately, the introduction of settlers from Zenan in 920 A.D. disrupted their fragile way of life, and the remaining Dragonians died off. Their traditions were still maintained by Demi-humans, though by 1020 A.D., only the establishment known as Fort Dragonia remained operative.

After the Dragon God was defeated and returned to the belly of the Time Devourer, the only Reptite influences left in the world were the presence of Demi-humans and the physical architecture remaining around El Nido.
