The Carpenter's Tools (also known as Tools in the SNES/PS version) are a Key Item in Chrono Trigger. They are needed to repair the Hero's Grave in the sidequest involving Cyrus and Frog.
How to Obtain[]
Travel to the Present and speak with the Carpenter in the Choras Inn. Ask him for his tools and he will direct the party toward his wife, who lives in the surrounding village. Once she obliges, head to Choras in the Middle Ages and give the Tools to another carpenter in the Cafe. Shortly after, he and his team fix up the ruins for a small fee.
