Schala (サラ , Sara?) is a character in Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes. Schala is the gentle, meek, and beautiful princess of Zeal.

AppearanceEdit

Adorned in purple robes, Schala sports voluminous purple or blue hair that she keeps tied with a red ribbon. She wears huge circular earrings and a Dreamstone Pendant. Her skin is very pale and she appears smug or saddened most of the time.

BiographyEdit

After the incident of the Ocean Palace, Schala transports Crono's friends to First Village; and after they succeed in defeating Lavos, she is assumed dead or missing. When Crono returns to the Ocean Palace in search of a disturbance detected by Belthasar, they learn that King Zeal has reawoken Schala so that she may play a role in his devilish scheme. Freed from Dalton's barrier by her voice, Magus travels to the Ocean Palace, battles his father, and travels back to Chronopolis with Lucca to check on Schala, who was previously rescued by Crono and Marle. Schala rests in the Enetron-like machines present there and is reunited with Magus. At first, she does not recognize him but quickly picks up on his identity as her little brother, Janus, through his aura. While astounded by his seemingly sped-up aging, she allows him a chance to explain the events that led up to her resurrection.

Playable CharacterEdit

In the original project, Schala was scheduled to appear as a playable character, replacing Ayla. Several prototype videos and images were released on the internet, showing Schala in the End of Time leading other characters around. This project was known as the Project Schala, likely mimicking Project Kid from Chrono Cross. This aroused much anticipation from Chrono Trigger's fanbase, as many were angered by her apparent death or unification with the Dream Devourer and Time Devourer in the Chrono Trigger (DS) and Chrono Cross series games.

However, due to the difficulty of coding an entirely new character, the designers of Crimson Echoes decided to leave her as a Non-Player Character.

Name OriginEdit

The name Schala comes from the Arabic name, Salah, meaning virtuous. A prominent prophet in Islamic tradition bears this name. Her Japanese name, Sara, means Princess in Hebrew.
